The original Berberis thunbergii were introduced from Japan around 1864. There are now over 500 different species/cutlivars, in many shapes, sizes and colours. Over the years they have become one of the most planted of all shrubs.  Berberis thunbergii Maria is a RHS Award of Garden Merit winner. A relatively new cultivar it is one of the best of its type with an excellent columnar habit and superb golden foliage, both of which are retained through the whole growing season. The foliage emerges red, quickly turns yellow and produces lovely orange red autumn colours. It does not scorch in the summer sun. In spring, just as the leaves begin to emerge, it produces short racemes of small, dainty yellow flowers. In sun or semi shade and most soils, this easy to grow variety makes a great addition to any planting scheme where the leaf colour is in the design. Superb as a contrast in plantings with other dark leaved Berberis. This plant can be used in a mixed planting or as a stand alone specimen in the garden or can easily be grown in a pot. When growing in a pot or other container. Use a good quality John Innes compost as this plant will be there a long time and peaty types of compost eventually degrade and become too packed and choke the roots. Ensure you feed regularly as a hungry plant is a poor performer. We recommend Osmoscote pro 8 - 9 month applied in the early spring. One application gives all the nutrients the plant requires for the whole year. John Innes is a soils based compost.
