Bergenia are native to central Asia, from Afghanistan to China and the Himalayan region. They are clump-forming, evergreen perennials with a spirally arranged rosette of large, leathery, ovate or cordate leaves, often with wavy or saw-toothed edges. For most of the year, the leaves have a glossy green colour, but in autumn and winter and especially in poor soil, they often turn red or bronze. The flowers grow on a stem, similar in colour to a rhubarb stalk and most varieties have single, cone-shaped flowers. Bergenia Dragonfly Pink is one of the very compact, floriferous, Dragonfly series. Glossy green, small, roundish to oval, leathery, toothed, evergreen foliage, turning deep red purple in winter, above which the dense, rich pink flowers, with deeper veins and centre on thick stems appear from March to May and with flushes later in summer. Easy to grow in any reasonable soil in full sun to semi shade. A great plant for front of border or edging. Looks lovely in groups.
