The original Cotinus coggygria was introduced to the Uk around 1665 from the far east. Cotinus coggygria Golden Spirit is a recent introduction and a superb addition to the Cotinus family. The really stunning foliage emerges bronzed in spring, opening chartreuse yellow, turns golden yellw through summer and in autumn puts on the most amazing display of hues of warm orange and crimson red, beautifully complemented by different shades of lovely coral pink. From July to September vast numbers of tiny pinkish white flowers are produced on large plumes. Later they turn a light grey giving the appreance, especially when viewed with the sun behind them, of a cloud of smoke, hence the common name of Smoke Bush. This plant can be used in a mixed planting or as a stand alone specimen in the garden or a container. If planting in a pot or other container. Use a good quality John Innes compost as this plant will be there a long time and peaty types of compost eventually degrade and become too packed and choke the roots. Ensure you feed regularly as a hungry plant is a poor performer. We recommend Osmoscote pro 8-9 month applied in the early spring. One application gives all the nutrients the plant requires for the whole year. John Innes is a soils based compost.
