Edgeworthia chrysantha

Edgeworthia chrysantha - Paper Bush - 9 cm Pot
Availability: In stock

Introduced to the Uk. around 1845 this native of the Himalayas and China has long been cultivated in Japan where it is still highly prized as a plant for the high quality paper it produces, which is used for Japanese currency. I am sure the Japanese also enjoy it as a wonderful ornamental garden shrub! To my mind, as an ornamental garden plant, Edgeworthia chrysantha is one of the finest winter flowering shrubs. During summer and autumn this plant is, in truth, just another, rather odd looking, green shrub, however in winter it is a thing of great beauty and pleasure. A sizeable bush with a mass of yellow flowers is a sight to behold and the fragrance has to be experienced to be believed. Generally hardy throughout the Uk. it prefers a sunny sheltered location that does not suffer from water logging. Pruning is rarely ever necessary, but can be done in early spring after the danger of frost has passed. This plant can be used in a mixed planting, as a central specimen plant or in a container. If planting in a pot or other container. Use a good quality, well drained, John Innes compost as this plant will be there a long time and peaty types of compost eventually degrade and become too packed and choke the roots. Ensure you feed regularly as a hungry plant is a poor performer. We recommend Osmoscote pro 8-9 month applied in the early spring. One application gives all the nutrients the plant requires for the whole year. John Innes is a soils based compost.
