A great plant and especially if you are looking to create that tropical/Mediterranean effect. Red Star is one of a number of varieties bred for their vibrant distinct dark purple leaves. A word of warning. It can only be propagated commercially by tissue culture. A purple leaf form can be grown from seed and I have seen these passed of as ""Cheap"" versions of Red Star. The difference is that the leaves are much less intense in colour. This palm like tree is very easy to grow but is not completely hardy. In southern areas it will survive quite easily in sunny sheltered locations away from strong winds and cold weather. In northern areas and in harder southern winters it requires protection. The bigger trees with more than 1 mtr of trunk are hardier than younger plants. Unlike the green variety these seldom flower. This plant can be used in a mixed planting or as a stand alone specimen in the garden or can easily be grown in a pot or other container in a greenhouse or large conservatory. If in a pot it can stay outside over winter but ensure the compost has grit added and is free draining. It must never freeze more than around the edges. Use a good quality John Innes compost as this plant will be there a long time and peaty types of compost eventually degrade; become too packed and choke the roots. Ensure you feed regularly as a hungry plant is a poor performer. We recommend Osmoscote pro 5-6 month applied in the early spring. One application gives all the nutrients the plant requires for the whole year. John Innes is a soils based compost.
