Hostas originate from China, Japan, Korea and far eastern Russia. Named after Austrain botanist, Nicholas Thomas Host, they have become an enormously popular, shade tolerant plant that has been the subject of a great deal of breeding to bring us the large range of plants available today. Prized for its colourful, architectural leaves, it has been a firm favourite in our gardens for well over a century. In winter the leaves die away, however the underground rhizomes live on to produce larger and larger clumps each year. Hosta Fire and Ice is an RHS award winning plant. A compact variety with delightful twisted leaves, that have bottle green margins and splashes of pure white at the centre. In July and August spikes of lavender, funnel shaped, flowers appear. A lovely plant. Easy to grow in any semi to full shade location. They prefer moist, well drained, humus rich soil but often grow in most mist shady locations. The plants can be lifted and divided every 3-4 years or just left to form large and larger clumps. This plant can be used in a mixed planting or as a stand alone specimen in the garden or can easily be grown in a pot or other container. Use a good quality compost. Ensure you feed regularly as a hungry plant is a poor performer. We recommend Osmocote pro 8-9 month applied in the early spring. One application gives all the nutrients the plant requires for the whole year. This plant likes to be moist.
