A striking grass that forms rounded erect clumps. Very narrow tufted leaves of silvery green shimmer with the slightest movement. The blades are linear, green and strongly suffused with vibrant red. Easily grown in average or medium to wet soils, however these must drain freely. Plant in full sun for best colour, although this grass will grow in part shade. Imperata cylindrica Red Baron is not the hardiest of grasses so heavily mulch the crowns in harsh weather to prevent frost damage to the crown. This plant can be used in a mixed planting or as a stand alone specimen in the garden or a container. If planting in a pot or other small container use a good quality John Innes compost as this plant will be there a long time and peaty types of compost eventually degrade and become too packed and choke the roots. Ensure you feed regularly as a hungry plant is a poor performer. We recommend Osmoscote pro 8-9 month applied in the early spring. One application gives all the nutrients the plant requires for the whole year. John Innes is a soils based compost. Do not allow the pot or containers to dry out.
