J. Arthur Bowers John Innes No. 2 Compost 5l to 25l
Traditional loam-based formulation with limestone, grit and sand, is a fantastic everyday use general purpose potting compost and has good soil structure that does not degrade over time.
Its key elements consist of:
Loam - this provides the main body of the compost and essential nutrients to the plant. In addition to the three main nutrients, Nitrogen, Phosphorous and Potassium, loam also contains organic matter and micro-elements. Loam based composts are very effective at retaining nutrients which they release gradually to the plants. In dry conditions a loam-based compost will require less watering.
Nitrogen - encourages plants to grow strong and promotes lush green foliage.
Peat - can boost the total porosity of the compost and improve aeration and water retention. Aerating the soil allows small pockets of air to remain in the soil, assisting in the growth of strong root systems.
Sand - in addition to increased stability sand is used as a physical conditioner to allow the drainage of excess water which is crucial to prevent the root system being starved of oxygen, causing eventual death.
Potash - ensures proper maturation in plants by improving overall health, disease resistance, yield rates and root strength. In addition, potash creates a better final product, improving the colour, texture, and taste of edible plants.
Phosphorous - an essential nutrient for plants to help them flower and for new plants to produce strong roots.
John Innes No.2 is ideal as an all-year-round multi-purpose compost ideal for potting on plants, as an additive to most planting holes and when planting bulbs in the autumn as it encourages root growth thus leading to better flowering the following spring.
Use John Innes No.1 for seedlings and cuttings, John Innes No.3 for larger and more vigorous plants and John Innes Ericaceous Compost for ericaceous plants.
