Magnolia George Henry Kern - 9 cm Pot
Availability: In stock

Magnolia George Henry Kern was raised in 1935 in Cincinnati USA, as a cross between Magnolia liliiflora Nigra and Magnolia stellata Rosea. A lovely, medium size, deciduous tree, that is renown for its long flowering period from mid spring to summer. Flowers begin before the leaves and are soft pink, tulip shaped. Easy to grow in a sun or semi shade location in most acid to neutral soils. Will not grow well in alkaline soils.  Planted in a good location it is not likely to need pruning but this can be done sparingly after flowering and when all danger of frost has passed. Really a stunningly beautiful tree. This plant can be used in a mixed planting or as a stand alone specimen in the garden or can easily be grown in a pot or other container. Use a good quality ericaceous John Innes compost as this plant will be there a long time and peaty types of compost eventually degrade, become too packed and choke the roots. Ensure you feed regularly as a hungry plant is a poor performer. We recommend Osmoscote pro 8-9 month applied in the early spring. One application gives all the nutrients the plant requires for the whole year. John Innes is a soils based compost.
