Magnolia liliiflora Nigra

Magnolia liliiflora Nigra - Black Lily Magnolia - 9 cm Pot
Availability: In stock

Magnolia liliiflora Nigra was introduced from Japan long ago as 1861 by J. P. Veitch and in 1907 was awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit.  A lovely, compact form of deciduous Magnolia with large flowers of slender tulip shape and deep vinous purple outside with a creamy white stained purple inside, borne freely over a long period from late April to June and occasionaly sporadically to autumn.  Easy to grow in most fertile soils, except chalky soils, in full sun or semi shade.  This plant can be used in a mixed planting or as a stand alone specimen in the garden or can very successfully be grown in a pot or other container. Use a good quality John Innes compost as this plant will be there a long time and peaty types of compost eventually degrade, become too packed and choke the roots. Ensure you feed regularly as a hungry plant is a poor performer. We recommend Osmoscote pro 8-9 month applied in the early spring. One application gives all the nutrients the plant requires for the whole year. John Innes is a soils based compost.
