Reputedly raised near Paris in the early 19th century all though it is likely forms of this tree were known in Japan centuries before it is now the best known and widest planted of the many types of Magnolia. Few plants can beat the sheer impact of this tree when in flower! Usually a small tree Susan produces masses of large tulip shaped upright flowers rosy purple with a flush of white in spring a truly stunning spectacle. The flowers are sensitive to damage by frost especially in early morning sun so a good precaution is to plant in a location that receives sun later in the day. Planted in a good location it is not likely to need pruning but this can be done sparingly after flowering and when all danger of frost has passed. Very tolerant of clay soil. Really a very beautiful tree. This plant can be used in a mixed planting or as a stand alone specimen in the garden or can easily be grown in a pot or other container. Use a good quality John Innes compost as this plant will be there a long time and peaty types of compost eventually degrade become too packed and choke the roots. Ensure you feed regularly as a hungry plant is a poor performer. We recommend Osmoscote pro 12-14 month applied in the early spring. One application gives all the nutrients the plant requires for the whole year. John Innes is a soils based compost. For more information please message us
