Penstemon Sour Grapes

Monarda orginate from the USA. Used for centuries in traditional herbal remedies and the oil of which gives the aroma and flavour to Earl Grey tea. Cambridge Scarlet is a Very fragrant popular garden plant. Vigorous and easy to grow, it produces aromatic, bronze-tinged, lanceolate leaves and terminal whorls of deep scarlet, two-lipped flowers. Excellent as a cut flower and a Very fragrant good attractor for Butterflies and Bees. Excellent in mixed borders or planted in clumps. Can be planted in a pot or other container. Use a good quality compost and ensure you feed regularly as a hungry plant is a poor performer. We recommend Osmoscote pro 5-6 month applied in the early spring. Penstemon are native to much of North America and were first scientifically described as far back as 1748. They were not sold as garden plants until first appearing in the catalogue of John Frazer in London in 1813. Scince then there have been many cultivars developed, a process that continues apace until this day. Penstemons are now established as one of the most popular of all garden herbaceous plants and with good reason. These superb deciduous to semi evergreen plants produce lush green lance shaped foliage in large clumps. From July to October abundant tall stems of foxglove like flowers rise above the foliage. Dead heading will maintain flower production until the first frosts. Penstemon Sour Grapes is an RHS Award of Garden Merit Winner. A superb variety bearing abundant, tubular flowers that vary in colour from magenta violet with purple undertones, to soft violet blue. Easy to grow Penstemons prefer moist, fertile, free draining soil, in a full sun or semi shade location. They will grow well in clay soils as long as they do not waterlog. Excellent as a mid border subject in a herbaceous border or can be planted in a pot or other container. Use a good quality compost and ensure you feed regularly as a hungry plant is a poor performer. We recommend Osmoscote pro 8-9 month applied in the early spring. One application gives all the nutrients the plant requires for the whole year.
