Pittosporum tobira is native to Japan, China and Taiwan and was introduced to the Uk in 1804. An undemanding slow-growing evergreen shrub, rarely reaching tree-like proportions in the UK. Attractive, leathery, glossy heavily cream variegated leaves held in whorls. Through late spring and early summer it produces abundant small heads of creamy white, quickly turning yellow, strongly orange blossom scented flowers which give rise to the common name, Japanese Mock Orange. In warm summers these can be followed by yellow fruits that open to expose attractive red seeds. Its exceptional tolerance to drought, wind and pruning make it a perfect candidate for hedges, especially in exposed milder coastal locations. This variegated form flowers earlier and more profusely than the green leaved variety but it is a little less hardy and requires some winter protection in cold areas. Easy to grow in most well drained soils in a sheltered sunny location. Can be used in a mixed planting or as a stand alone specimen in the garden or can easily be grown in a pot. When growing in a pot or other container. Use a good quality John Innes compost as this plant will be there a long time and peaty types of compost eventually degrade and become too packed and choke the roots. Ensure you feed regularly as a hungry plant is a poor performer. We recommend Osmoscote pro 12-14 month applied in the early spring. One application gives all the nutrients the plant requires for the whole year. John Innes is a soils based compost. Hard pruning can be safely undertaken to control the size of the plant but should not be undertaken when there is a danger of frost.
