Aronia x prunifolia Brilliant was selected in North America for the quality of its fruit. To be clear it was originally named Aronia melanocarpa Brilliant and is sometimes incorrectly named Aronia arbutifolia Brilliant. The species Aronia x prunifolia was derived from a cross between arbutifolia and melanocarpa, hence the confusion. Nomenclature aside, it is a very handsome, deciduous small shrub grown for both its edible red fruit and stunning autumn colours. In spring clusters of pretty white flowers appear to be followed by red tart berries that are used for a number of culinary purposes including jams and tarts. As the berries ripen the foliage turns the most wonderful shades of brilliant orange and red.  Easy to grow in a full sun or semi shade in most moist soils, including boggy ones. This plant will not do well in shallow chalky soils. Excellent as a border shrub or in the fruit garden. Can also be grown in pots and containers. Use a good quality, ericaceous compost and add a controlled release fertiliser to the compost, or feed regularly to ensure the plant performs to its best. Keep moist at all times. Â
