The species Aronia x prunifolia was originally derived from a cross between arbutifolia and melanocarpa.  Aronia x prunifolia Nero was selected in Europe for the quality and abundance of its fruit.  A very handsome, deciduous shrub grown for both its edible, dark purple fruit and lovely autumn colours.  In spring clusters of pretty white flowers appear to be followed by dark purple tart berries that are increasing in popularity for their use in jams and tarts and more.  As the berries ripen the foliage turns the most lovely shades of reddish orange.   Easy to grow in a full sun or semi shade in most moist soils, including boggy ones.  This plant will not do well in shallow chalky soils.  Excellent as a border shrub or in the fruit garden.  Can also be grown in pots and containers.  Use a good quality, ericaceous compost and add a controlled release fertiliser to the compost, or feed regularly to ensure the plant performs to its best. Keep moist at all times.
