Sambucus nigra f. porphyrophylla Black Tower - Elder - A striking and relatively recent developed form of this native plant. Columnar shape, leaves open green but rapidly turn dark purple in full sun. Flatish heads of small pink flowers that contrast beautifully with the foliage and have a noticeable lemon fragrance. The flowers are followed by bunches of black berries and are edible. A stunning focal plant in whatever location you chose to plant it! Virtually as tough as the well known hedgerow Elder it can be grown as part of a mixed planting, as an individual specimen, or in a pot or container. Use a good quality John Innes compost as this plant will be there a long time and peaty types of compost eventually degrade and become too packed and choke the roots. Ensure you feed regularly as a hungry plant is a poor performer. We recommend Osmoscote pro 8-9 month applied in the early spring. One application gives all the nutrients the plant requires for the whole year. John Innes is a soils based compost.
